Introduction
Animal Husbandry plays a vital role in determining the agricultural economy of the State. The main occupation of more than 75% of the rural population in this State is agriculture and its allied activities Agricultural activities are predominantly dependent on drought power provided by Animal Husbandry Sector. Production from the domesticated animals and poultry, like milk, meat, wool and eggs has become subsidiary occupation of the farmers in the State.
Objectives
The main objectives of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services in the District are of two-fold;(a) to provide health coverage to all the domestic animals , both for contagious and non-contagious diseases and (b)to take up livestock development activities for increasing the productivity of livestock, for the benefit of both producers as well as consumers.

As per the recommendations of the National Agricultural Commission, there should be one Veterinary Institution for health coverage of 5,000 Cattle units or every 10 villages. On this basis there should have been 128 Veterinary Institutions. But, at present there are 86 Institutions as follows

Service Provided by Department
The department is engaged in extending artificial insemination facilities for cattle and buffaloes with exotic dairy breeds and pedigreed buffalo bulls, for the improvement of the genetic merit for milk production and draught ability of the non-descript animals. Poultry Development, Sheep and Wool development, Piggery Development, Fodder Development, Rabbit Breeding, Training to Farmers as well as in-service personnel and students, in various aspects of dairying, sheep rearing, poultry, piggery and feeding practices. The Department has implemented several Socio-Economic programmes like Livestock Production Programme, Special Component Plan, Tribal Sub-Plan, Command Area Development, Integrated Development of Western Ghats, Draught Prone Area Programme etc. The Department also conducts Integrated Sample Survey annually for the estimation of production of the major livestock products viz., milk, egg, meat and wool in the State, besides conducting Livestock Census Quinquennially.

Special Component Plan : Central and State Sectors
Under this Scheme, financial help is provided for SC and ST.beneficiaries for purchase of animals with 60% Subsidy and 40% as Loan. For subsidy, the funds are released by Social Welfare department and the Loan by Banks.
Special Central Assistance (Central)
Under this scheme, financial assistance is provided exclusively for women Self-Help Groups with 75% Subsidy and 25% Loan.
